Visual Discrimination

One area of visual processing is visual discrimination. This is the ability to notice differences between two objects or pictures. Having the ability to look at items and to recognize whether they are the same or different is a key process in matching and categorizing. This can come into play throughout our daily lives. One example is when paying with coins, one must be able to discern the differences between a dime and a quarter in order to pay the right amount! It is also a key skill for reading and and learning to write.

Practicing this skill can be so. much. fun. Exhibit A: a game called “Spot It!” This game moves quickly and requires each participant to work through visual discrimination to figure out which object is the same on both cards. This game comes in different variations, and we often use the Jr. version in our clinic! Happy playing!
