First Visit: What to Expect

The time has come, and you have scheduled your initial evaluation appointment at Taylor Johnson Therapy. We are so excited to meet you! If you are wondering what to expect during an evaluation appointment, keep on reading!

Once you arrive at the office, you will take a seat in our waiting room. We have some books, toys, and puzzles here if you arrive early. Your therapist will come by the waiting room to greet you. If you filled out any paperwork, your therapist will grab it now. Before entering the office, they may have you leave your shoes in the waiting room.

During an initial evaluation, we typically ask for a parent or guardian to be present. This way we can gather more information. Your therapist will briefly show you all around the office, noting important places like the restroom!

Now your therapist will go over your paperwork and finish up gathering background information. If appropriate, a standardized assessment may be completed as well. Assessments look at sensory processing, fine motor skills, and/or gross motor skills. Your therapist will use a mix of observations and questioning to figure out the best plan of action for you!

At the end, your therapist will walk you through any next steps. They will make sure to give you their recommendations for any future visits. Your therapist will walk you back towards the waiting room, and it is time to head out!

If your child is feeling anxious about their initial visit, we have a social story we can share with you to help them prepare.
