We can hardly believe it but Thanksgiving is right around the corner! I wanted to give you all a glimpse into what we have been working on in clinic. We had so much fun playing a “Would You Rather?” Thanksgiving game. Some of the questions included options like would you rather wash your hair with mashed potatoes, or take a bath in gravy? In between these silly questions, we did gross motor movements like the windmills seen above. These movements provide proprioceptive input, as well as an opportunity to practice crossing mid line. Our pre-K group can be seen working towards this above, and we will continue to practice!
Some of our groups did a messy play activity with cranberry sauce. This is a fun way to work on tactile processing. This activity also gave our kids an opportunity to explore a food they may be unfamiliar with, but will likely see on Thanksgiving. Small chances to interact with foods outside of mealtimes can increase a child’s comfort level with novel items.
Our older group worked on kitchen skills by putting together a practice Thanksgiving meal. Some of the skills we focused on were reading directions, microwave skills, and utilizing utensils. We also went over how to take food from a buffet and how to manage foods on our plates that we do not enjoy. During this session, we had a child interact with green beans for the first time. Then, he asked for more from the serving bowl! Practicing traditional Thanksgiving foods before the big day can set your child up for success!
We wish you all a happy Thanksgiving!
