Independence in the Kitchen

Dinner club has been working so hard the past few months to master a few new kitchen skills. If you are wondering what skills your young teen could be working towards in the kitchen, check out this list!

  • Using a can opener (this one we have been working super hard on, it can be tricky!)
  • Safely using a knife to cut different items (strawberry tops, pancakes, carrots, etc.)
  • Loading and starting the dishwasher
  • 3-4 step microwaveable meals
  • No bake treats (chocolate covered trail mixes, Rice Krispy treats)
  • Wiping down the tables
  • Vacuuming the kitchen
  • Setting the table, safely passing items to peers, safely using “community” items

Sometimes, a checklist or visual schedule can help your teen remember and sequence through these kitchen tasks. A fun tip: if the directions on the back of a microwavable meal are too small or written in a confusing way, type it up in a nice large font checklist style so your teen can be independent!
