Back to School (tips and ideas)

Summer at the office always flies by way. too. fast. We spend a few weeks preparing for summer schedule (then we enjoy it for about 8 weeks), just in time to move over to a fall schedule! As our kids are easing back into the swing of things, here is a list of tips and ideas to ensure a smooth back to school transition.

  • I saw this idea online and instantly put it in my back pocket. Do a full practice run of the first morning of school – separate from a meet the teacher day. Wake up at the usual time, get ready for school, BUT instead of having breakfast at home, pick up a favorite breakfast treat (donuts or bagels would be perfect here). Bring that breakfast to school and enjoy at the park! A perfect end to summer practice run!
  • Complete a lunch practice run at home. Make sure your child can open and handle the containers including lunch bag zippers/bento boxes/water bottles/food packaging
  • Lay out clothing options the night before! Some children prefer selecting from two choices to avoid decision fatigue.
  • Practice those shoes! If you are sending your child to school in tie lace shoes, they should know how to tie them! Talk to your OT if this is something you are concerned about.
  • Consider creating an after school visual or written plan – this might include steps like taking out their “take home” folders, putting lunchboxes away, and/or hanging up their coats and backpacks.
  • Allow time for regulation after school – this might look like snacks, solo time, co-regulation time, or gross motor movement. This is a great opportunity to chat with your child’s OT to figure out the best sensory input for your child.
  • Lastly, consider avoiding questions like “how was school?” – sometimes open ended questions can feel overwhelming. Try “Tell me one thing you did at school today” or “What is one thing you played at recess today?”

Happy back to school everyone!
